Introduction

Internet Relay Chat ("IRC") at its best is really too much fun! Like other things that are too much fun, it verges on being an obsession. Luckily there is no proof that too much IRC will make you go blind, although it is possible some sleep deprivation can result!

With IRC you can make great friends all over the world or right next door. People have fallen in love through IRC, and hearts have been broken on IRC too. Its a twenty four by seven meeting place, a round the clock party in progress.

In order to have the most fun possible at the party, it helps to know your way around because there are many rooms ("Channels") in the party house. Each Channel has a different mood and feel to it. Some are truly horrible places, others feel like a great place to spend a while and to return to again. The Terrific Channels section of this page is linked to information about a few of the thousands of channels. The focus is on Channels aimed at mature and pleasant adults, on making new friends, on meeting nice people. The channels listed are ones you may find feel like home. In fact you will notice over a period of several visits that many of the same people return again and again to these channels to meet people they know and nurture relationships over the months.

The other way to ensure a good time at a party is to get to know a few of the party goers right away. Each person on IRC has a nickname ("Nick") at any single point in time. Most people like to use the same nick from day to day so that they can recognize each other again and again when they meet. To ease the process of getting to know the nicks who frequent the channels that are listed here, a directory of nicks is also linked to this page in the Terrific Nicks section. Here you will find many pictures, and some biographical information, to help you get to know the regulars.

Also here for you enjoyment is a section for announcements of interest to the IRC community represented here. Its a place to read about happenings and events that may not be specific to just one Channel. This section of the page is called Terrific Party Lines, reminiscent of the rural party line telephones that fed all the neighbors listening in their gossip years ago.

A section on this page called Terrific IRC Geekware is provided to give you links that will help you download programs, utilities, and help files some of the community has found useful to enhance their fun with IRC.

Terrific Channels

The Actual Terrific Channels

Terrific Channels are those that have been "adopted" by Computerrific Technology, and have been provided with homepages here at www.terrific.com . Since we can't support all the thousands of Channels on IRC, the list is short and tends to be made up of places the Terrific Nicks like to meet and call home. See the Credits section if you want to suggest other Channels for "adoption".

#40oasis

#40oasis has versions open on both the DALnet and the EFNet networks.

DALnet #40oasis

A channel is registered on DALnet as #40oasis with the nick #Terrific as owner. Terrific intends to operate the DALnet #40oasis along the lines of the EFNet's #40oasis, except that a small group of Nicks registered with DALnet will be given super-operator privileges by the DALnet servers. It will be nice if some of the Terrific Nicks register on DALnet soon to help out with the operation of this channel. Any who do register with DALnet and want super-operator privileges are welcome to ask in Channel or to Email Terrific, see the Credits section for my address. Currently the DALnet version is very quiet, most of the chatting goes on over on EFNet

EFNet #40oasis

Here is the original EFNet's #40oasis. This is the Channel that started so many others, and where many friends and even lovers and spouses first met each other. The Channel is in "recovery" mode now, having gone through a time where it was under constant harassment by hackers and full of internal politics among the regulars. There were so many different expectations from different nicks for a while! Things seem to have settled out now though, and the nice part is that several new Channels formed so that everyone can enjoy more variety now!

#40haven

#40haven has had versions open on both the DALnet and the EFNet networks in the past, but has now moved to a new network of servers known as BEYONDnet.

BEYONDnet #40haven

This is a popular spot, which was begun by LaSassy and friends over on EFNet in Sep/96! Although the channel home page doesn't reside at terrific.com, I just had to list this one as an official Terrific Channel! Is such a favorite of mine! A lot of familiar nicks are frequently gathered there having a real nice chat, and the channel operators do a wonderful job of keeping it civilized but fun!

Some Other Pretty Terrific Channels

The following channels are terrific places to chat too, and are listed in their own section just to indicate that where they have home pages set up they have done it without hosting from www.terrific.com and operate quite independently from Terrific.

Efnet - #40sumpin

This is a very busy channel which has been around a long time now. There is a fresh and growing homepage here to see, and lots of good people in the channel to chat to.

Terrific IRC Geekware

Help Finding IRC Servers

There are several different networks of servers available for IRC chatting. Each network is a universe unto itself. Most of the servers are part of the EFNet, which was the original IRC network. Most of the channels and nicks listed on this page are also found on the EFNet. While EFNet is the largest network, it is also a rather undisciplined place. As a result, other networks of servers have been created. One of these is DALnet. Here are links to lists of servers for both EFNet and DALnet networks.

DALnet IRC Network -- DALnet has an information page here, which will give you a list of all the DALnet servers as well as lots of help to use the special features available in DALnet.

List of Servers on EFNet -- This link leads to a list of servers for the EFNet IRC Channels which is kept quite current by the author. If you are having trouble connecting an need to find more servers to try, please have a look at this list of them.

Help With mIRC - An IRC Chat Client

CTFire's One Stop mIRC Shop -- The only place in the world that houses over 350 mIRC files!

Eric's mIRC Scripts -- Eric's page has scripts, add ons, Daemons, and excellent FAQs (frequently asked questions documents) for mIRC.

Other Cool Tools

The EARchives! -- If you like playing sound files (.wav files) in the channel to spice things up, then you'll love this site. It has hundreds of .wav files from movies stored on it ready for you to download and add to your collection!

The Movie Sounds Page -- Has lots of sound clips from Movies, and also many links to other sounds pages.

Credits

Many of these pages are made possible by donation of resources and expertise from Computerrific Technology, and from the Editor, David Wadleigh.

Suggestions and submissions of content are welcomed by Email to terrific@terrific.com

If you would like to have a channel page added, or a channel's home page linked, to the list of Terrific Channels we welcome your suggestions and will consider them on a case by case basis given the limits of our resources.

If you would like your nick listed in the Terrific Nicks section we would be happy to oblige, again subject to limits of time and disk space. To request your nick be added to the list, please email your picture if you have one, your nick or nicks, and any biographical information you would like to share in the listing. There is currently no charge for this service, although we do have a worthy cause which would welcome a donation if you can see your way to helping us with it. We estimate the value of such a customized nick listing averages $30.00 Canadian or $20.00 US for the initial set up and a year's storage and a couple of periodic updates. This does not in any way mean you need to feel obligated to donate that amount, just to provide some hint of appropriateness should you care to.

Submissions of announcements for the Terrific Party Line and links for the Terrific IRC Geekware sections are also most welcome by Email.
